Growing up in Noe Valley in San Francisco, Ariel's family had a neighborhood walk they called "The Square." It was a nice little amble that looped back to their apartment, via the little downtown shopping area on 24th street. It has everything you need as a kid en route -- playground, farmers' market, a bakery.
This summer we spent four weeks in SE Asia on assignment, with about a week in each country. We would spend the first few days shooting and then have a couple extra days to explore. Unlike our backpacking days of yore, with a heavy itinerary of sightseeing and long day trips, we found that with kids we would land in a city and from our apartment doorstep, find "The Square."
There were playgrounds, cafes, libraries with A.C., water parks, and so many fruit stands right outside our door. Locals would come up to us and ask if we had recently moved there since they had seen us around the neighborhood all week, sharing pastries with the kids. We didn't see many sites, but we got the chance to live in a place, if only for a short moment, and feel what it was like to be part of the community.
Here are some family photos from our first stop, Taiwan. We'll post a few more photo diaries in the coming weeks of Vietnam, Laos + Thailand. We're keeping our main photo project under wraps for now, but stay tuned for an announcement.

Just down the Hwy 1 is a magical little beach town called Half Moon Bay. We're still getting warm weather here in California and we were lucky to have two beautiful days on the coast. We stayed in a gorgeous beach cottage, that was literally across the street from the sea and a 20 minute walk to Main Street, where we got carrot cake and made a visit to the local library. We didn't get in the car once! It was lovely. And Nana and Babo joined us on the beach as well, happy to escape The City for the day.
Thank you Jillian for hosting us! If you need a perfect family spot to stay in Half Moon Bay, this cottage is the spot :) Enjoy!

Fall colors are hard to find in the Bay Area, since our weather is so mild, but head east, into the Sierras and the trees burst into color come October! We spent a glorious four days in Truckee, where the gorgeous Cedar House Sport Hotel hosted us while we were in town. Such a luxurious stay -- hot tub, a huge suite and the most delicious breakfast every morning in the Stella restaurant.
The weather had already dipped to cool, but we still got plenty of outdoor time. Juniper was so bold and got her feet in the freezing lake water, while we kept little Wilder bundled up and cozy as can be.
The Sierras in California are one of the most beautiful places in the world. The huge granite stones, crisp water and endless green. And it's only three hours away in the car -- or four -- or six... if you have kids ;) Hehe!
We hope you enjoy the this travel diary of photos from our trip!

One of the big perks of being wedding photographers is that we get to travel a lot for weddings all over California and the country. And we bring our family! And we also bring along Nana and Patti to watch the little ones -- best babysitters ever!
Before diving into a full day of wedding photography, we spent Friday afternoon at the Yuba River, swimming, doing water painting and skipping smooth stones. It was a lovely afternoon and super kid friendly. Even though the Yuba River is a powerful force of water, it mellows out in a calm pool below the bridge and is safe for baby play. Just a 2.5 hr drive from the Bay (or 3-5 hrs if you have little ones -- hehe!). Hope you make the trip too!
